About Me
My name is Brooke Porter and I am a musician, student music therapist, and music teacher.
My love of music started at a very young age. I started piano lessons at the age of 4 and vocal lessons at the age of 6. I continued taking music lessons throughout elementary school and high school, until I was accepted into the Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Western Ontario. As a voice major, I studied under the tutelage of Brian McIntosh and graduated with a Bachelor of Music: Honors Specialization in Music Education degree with a concentration in vocal and choral education. I had also completed a minor in Psychology.
After completing my undergraduate degree, I decided to combine my love for music and psychology and apply to the Master of Music Therapy program at Wilfrid Laurier University. I was accepted into the program and have currently completed two semesters of the two year degree. Thus far, I have had experience using a music-centred psychotherapy approach with clients with autism spectrum disorder, dementia, Alzheimer's, and depression. I will continue to gain more clinical experience throughout the degree. Once my degree is complete, I will be applying to register with the Canadian Association of Music Therapy and the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario to receive the Music Therapist Accredited and Registered Psychotherapist accreditations, respectively.
As a music teacher, I have experience teaching both individual and group lessons. For individual lessons, I teach piano and voice to any age or skill level. For group lessons, I was the Head Teacher of the Music Starters program; an early childhood music education program for children ages 3-6. As the Head Teacher, I introduced children to different musical instruments and theory concepts as well as playing piano, drums, and singing with familiar music.
